Technical Writer, Occasional Godlike Genius
More about meGoDaddy - A good place to start a web project
To create this site, I did the following:
How I made this site!
We used Hugo at StrongDM, and I wanted to keep learning it. So, I did.
Here are some other things I'd like to do with Hugo:
git commit -m "Explain the importance of Git to ESS"
When you create documentation (or code), versioning is everything. A popular tool for this is GitHub, which we used at StrongDM. Our wise manager suggested we tech writers learn some Git to understand what goes on "under the hood" in GitHub.
When I began learning Git, it really brought depth and context to using GitHub. Every git commit came to life in the GitHub UI. Using Git for more than docs versioning (e.g., code, websites, etc.) is super helpful, too.
sudo writer --technical
I've used the command line to run Docker Compose and maintain Bright Pattern test environments for the documentation team. I've used it to browse directories and read content. I've used it to develop and render this website. (But I really don't like VIM.)
Pull requests are the way
Pull requests are my favorite part of GitHub. Why? Because this is where you actually get peer feedback, interdepartmental interactions, questions, answers, and more all in the same place. All these interactions add up and give you real, on-the-job training opportunities.
I drink wine and learn things.
What are some necessary steps to start a documentation effort?
Recording Zoom or call sessions, and be able to distil them later into meaningful and ready-to-consume formats. Using STT functionalities for interview transcriptions instead of listening to something a million times. Knowing the questions to ask that will get you the answers you want (hint = use gentle commands). Actively listening and asking a lot of questions afterward. There are so many!
